Sclerotherapy is often considered the treatment of choice to improve the appearance of smaller varicose and spider veins. Sclerotherapy involves injecting a solution directly into the vein.

The sclerotherapy solution causes the vein to scar, forcing blood to reroute through healthier veins. The collapsed vein is reabsorbed into local tissue and eventually fades.

Benefits of Sclerotherapy

Non-invasive procedure, virtually painless

Little to no downtime, you can immediately resume your regular activities

Up to 80% success rate per treatment

Results are final! ONCE treated the malfunctioning vein is destroyed

Relatively quick treatment, 30 minutes or less (typically)

What To Expect of The Sclerotherapy Procedure

Before the procedure:
You may be required to complete an ultrasound imaging exam of the affected area. The exam is an integral part in assessing the diseased vein and planning the procedure and is virtually painless.

During the procedure:
Sclerotherapy is an outpatient procedure which requires no anesthesia. A fine needle is used to gently insert the specialized solution into the diseased vein. The solution, usually in liquid form, works by irritating the lining of the vein, causing it to swell shut and block the flow of blood. On occasion a foam version of the solution may be used, particularly when a larger vein is involved. Foam tends to cover more surface area than liquid. Some solutions contain a local anesthetic called lidocaine to aid with mild discomfort. The number of injections depends on the amount and size of veins being treated.

After the procedure:
You will be asked to wear compression socks or stockings to maintain compression on the treated veins. Your post-treatment care will be tailored to your needs. Unless otherwise stated you can return to normal activity immediately after the procedure. Limited sun exposure is recommended shortly after treatment, the inflammation caused by the injections combined with sun exposure can lead to dark spots on your skin. The treated vein(s) will become scar tissue and eventually disappear.

COMPRESSION SOCKS

COMPRESSION VEIN

Why must you wear compression stockings post treatment?

Compression stockings (or socks) are a specially designed elastic hosiery that support healthy blood circulation.

They reduce the diameter of distended veins and increase venous blood flow velocity and valve effectiveness.

Compression therapy helps decrease venous pressure, prevents venous stasis and impairments of venous walls, and relieves heavy and aching legs.

Choosing the right size and compression level for your stocking (or socks) is crucial to feel as comfortable as possible and to take advantage of all the benefits they provide.

We measure and fit each client individually to ensure optimal treatment results.

It’s important to keep in mind self-care treatments will not change the look of varicose veins. If you do not respond to self-care or if your condition is more severe your next step would be to consult a vascular surgeon.

We are one of the only clinics in the GTA with a vascular surgeon on their team.
