The mommy makeover is a series of surgical procedures to restore the shape and appearance of a women’s body after having children. Many women experience changes in their bodies post-pregnancy that leave them feeling unsatisfied. The goal of the mommy makeover is to improve these problematic areas most commonly the breasts, abdomen, waist, genitalia, and buttocks. Although it may seem like a series of surgeries, all areas are addressed as a single stage procedure.

Who is a good candidate for a mommy makeup?
The Mommy makeover is a highly personal surgery and your decision to proceed should be carefully considered. The ideal candidate will be doing the procedure only for themselves and not to fit an ideal image or someone else’s desires.

Other factors that may make you a candidate
for mommy makeover include:

  • If you are finished childbearing and not planning to have any other children
  • If you are in overall good medical health
  • If you are at your ideal body weight
  • If you are unhappy with the irreversible changes your body has undergone post-pregnancy

What are the possible procedures in a mommy makeover?

What are the steps of the mommy makeover?

Step 1. Anesthesia

Your doctor will administer medications to make you comfortable during the procedure. After deciding with your doctor what is best for you, this could be intravenous sedation and general anesthesia.

Step 2. Surgical procedures

Your mommy makeover could include any of the various surgeries below depending on what you and your doctor have elected.

Breast augmentation
During breast augmentation a breast implant will be inserted to enhance your natural breast shape and size, as well as add volume to sagging breasts.

Breast lift
The breast lift will address the sagging skin of the breasts in cases that are more extreme. Your doctor may perform a breast lift in conjunction with breast augmentation, or may only perform one or the other depending on the degree of sagging skin and desired results.

Buttocks augmentation
Buttocks augmentation is performed by either inserting implants, using a fat transfer from existing fat (Brazilian butt lift), or a combination of both. The surgery will enhance the shape and contours of your buttocks, creating a lifted effect. How much projection you may see will depend on the implant size, and/or the amount of fat available for transfer. It is important to note that with fat grafting the body typically retains only 60 to 80 percent of the fat.

Liposuction
Liposuction will address the stubborn fat existing in a number of areas on the body. A small incision is made and an instrument called a cannula is inserted. The fat is dislodged with back and forth movements, and is then sucked out of the body using a surgical vacuum.

Tummy tuck
While liposuction will remove fat, your abdomen may require a tummy tuck if there is an excess of sagging skin. One or more incisions will be made, typically along the pubic area, and excess skin will be trimmed. What remaining skin is left will be pulled down, and a new opening is created for the belly button. In more extreme cases underlying weak abdominal muscles can also be repaired during the procedure.

Vaginal rejuvenation
Vaginal rejuvenation is comprised of one or more surgeries to recover the look and function of the female genitalia post-pregnancy. The procedure could include labiaplasty, clitoral hood reduction, labia majoraplasty, monsplasty, and vaginoplasty (tightening of the vagina).

Step 3. The Results

Because the mommy makeover can be extensive, each area of your body will likely recover at different paces. The final results of your procedure may not be noticeable for several months and scars from incisions will fade over time, but never fully disappear. Despite this, most women see a major improvement in their body contours and self-confidence.
