Summer to Fall Skin Care Transition

Fall is coming! Temperatures are dropping, days are getting shorter, nights are getting longer, the air is getting colder and drier, and our skin begins to lose its moisture.

It is important to adjust your skin care regimen when we begin to enter a new season. With the change in climate, our skin loses its natural moisture. The drier and colder weather also promotes the worsening of acne and rosacea. Therefore, we need to adjust our skin care routines to hydrate our skin, preventing the drying, sensitive, redness, and itching effects, and the aggravation of acne and rosacea from occurring. In addition, the failure to hydrate around the eyes also causes irritation and pigmentation, which leads to what we all despise – under eye dark circles.

Our bodies’ natural skin barrier comprises primarily of lipids. They work to prevent moisture loss. Aging and sun damage can cause the depletion of this barrier. Moisturizing can help improve the barrier by reducing water loss while the natural barrier works to renew itself. Therefore, the first and most important step when transitioning into the fall season is hydrating your skin! There are two types of moisturizers: Protective emollients, or occlusive agents, and hydrators, also known as humectants or hydrophilic agents.

Protective emollients or occlusive agents comprise of fatty acids that causes occlusion – the ability to keep moisture in the skin. These help the skin to keep its natural moisture from escaping the epidermis by placing a layer of emollient over the skin.

Hydrators, humectants or hydrophilic agents, are comprised of ‘water-loving’ molecules. They attract water from the lower levels of the skin to the surface, and can attract water from the atmosphere, locking moisture onto the skin’s surface.

Our everyday moisturizers contain both emollients and humectants. Creams, which are thicker in consistency, have more emollients than lotions or fluids. Therefore, when transitioning from summer to fall, it’s best to change from lotions to creams.

You can also help boost your body’s moisture, treat post-summer skin problems and gain better, smoother, hydrated, and healthy skin with services provided here at NewDermaMed:

Oxygen Facials – these super hydrating facial treatments use fine mists of oxygen infused with vitamins to instantly plump, hydrate and smoothen your skin cells. A great bonus to this is that it creates a great canvas for easy and smooth makeup application!

Microdermabrasion – Now that summer is over, it is important to exfoliate and get rid of dead skin cells that lay on the surface of our skins. These dead skin cells create a dull, uneven skin tone. With microdermabrasion, it gently clears your skin and most importantly – refreshes your skin! Microdermabrasion significantly treats clogged pores, dry and dull skin patches, sunspots and other skin conditions caused by sun exposure during the summer!

Laser Genesis and IPL Photo Rejuvenation – The long sunny summer days in many cases causes us to develop sun spots, also known as age-spots, uneven skin tones and textures due to sun exposure, especially unprotected sun exposure. With Laser Genesis and Photo rejuvenation, we can help you achieve radiant, clear, and smooth skin for the upcoming fall season!
